What Is Active Sitting and How Does It Work?

What Is Active Sitting?

The first thing you might be wondering is WHAT is active sitting!? How can something inherently lazy like sitting ALL DAY on your posterior (aka BOOTAY) and be healthy or active?!

Seems impossible right?!! It IS NOT! I’m going to show you how to be a killer employee at your desk job AND keep your Thor-Like Pecs or Wonder Woman-like thighs and stay in shape while you slave for “the man”!

You’re NOT in the Twilight Zone!

Active Sitting is a relatively new trend and if you work in an office you’ll be happy to know about it!

If you type of person to clock out after some boss took 8hours of your day, and you’re like “my butt is flabby and my back is weak and for its time to for 45 minutes of cardio while watching Netflix”, then I’m LITERALLY speaking to you!

Don’t’ ignore me!! I cant get quite “stalky” when I need to!

Don’t Make Me Do IT!! 😄

How Does Active Sitting Work?

It describes using some type of instability device that forces you to be active while sitting in an office chair. Instead of just sitting there while the muscles in your body do nothing, active sitting forces you to engage certain muscles.

Trying to stay fit while working at your office desk is a relatively new idea, an idea born from the necessity of finding ways to get sedentary workers to be more active. When it comes to exercise any exercise at all is better than none, and active sitting can actually be quite effective at helping your overall health.

So, to put it simply active sitting makes you do more than just sit there like a lump on a stump while staring at your computer screen all day.

Active Sitting Health Benefits

There are many active sitting health benefits that can do a lot of good for people that sit in office chairs at work all day.

Believe it or not, people were not meant to be sedentary creatures. We weren’t meant to sit in office chairs staring at a computer screen all day. That’s not how our bodies evolved. We were meant to be physically active, so when people that sit in office chairs all day end up with health problems it really shouldn’t be that much of a surprise.

Obesity Is At An All-Time High

When you look at an office and see everyone sitting in an office chair, only getting up to use the bathroom or get more coffee, does this seem like a healthy lifestyle? Of course Not!

That’s why it shouldn’t shock anyone that obesity is at an all-time high. How does obesity impact your health?

  • Being overweight increases your chances of heart disease.
  • Being overweight increases your chances of developing diabetes.
  • Being overweight increases your chances of developing joint problems.
  • Being overweight increases your chances of having a stroke.
  • Being overweight increases your chances of suffering from depression.

That’s quite a list of negative things there isn’t it? It should be clear at this point that if you want to live a long, happy, and healthy life, being overweight is not the way to go.

Unfortunately, if you are reading this it’s probably because you are one of the majority of the population that now spends most of their workday in an office chair.

While being active when you aren’t at work is a must, no amount of activity is going to undo 8 to 10 hours a day of sitting in a chair. That’s where the benefits of active sitting come into the picture.

What Are The Benefits Of Active Sitting?

When it comes to active sitting health benefits one of the primary ones is that it takes a job that is sedentary in nature and adds a level of physical activity to it. Here are a few benefits to keep in mind.

  • Sitting on an unbalanced surface will help you to improve your posture, strengthen your core, and avoid back problems.
  • As your muscles are constantly engaged, it can also help you to burn calories while you are sitting in an office chair, which will help you to avoid becoming overweight.
  • Circulation can improve by encouraging movement.
  • Active sitting will help you to feel more energetic while working and help to ease some of the boredom that many of us feel while sitting in a chair and staring at a computer screen all day.
  • You may find yourself becoming a more productive employee. When you are physically engaged your mind is going to be sharper, which makes you more productive.

What Is An Active Sitting Disc and How Does It Work?

An active sitting disc is a small, inexpensive, inflatable disc that you put on top of an office chair and sit on. It really is that simple to use.

The way that it works is that it is designed to be unstable, which forces you to constantly use your muscles to stabilize yourself.

Don’t worry, you won’t be tumbling to the floor if you don’t pay attention, they are designed to be moderately unstable, just enough to make you move, but not enough to make you fall down.

Your spine joints are kept moving and your back muscles are strengthened, which will help to prevent lower back pain that plagues many people.

So, What are Other Office Fitness Equipment Options To Consider?

A Balance Ball Chair

To Get this Balance Ball Chair CLICK HERE!

This is a large, inflatable ball that you use instead of a chair. A balance ball is going to force your body to work harder than an active sitting disk, which can be both good and bad. It’s good because you will get a lot of exercise while sitting in your office chair.

However, Oo the negative side, you probably don’t want to have to work that hard physically all day while you are working just as hard mentally on your computer.

A Balance Board aka Wobble Board

A balance board sits at the foot of your chair and you rest your feet on it instead of on the floor.  Actually, rest wouldn’t be the right word in this situation. You place your feet on it, and it shifts back and forth which forces you to work to keep your feet steady.
